Teacher Education Programs in British Columbia
There are nine teacher education programs in BC that prepare teachers to teach in
the K-12 public school system. The programs range from one to two years and include
both theoretical coursework and practical experiences in schools.
The Teacher Regulation Branch is responsible for ensuring that applicants for teaching
certificates meet certain standards of qualification and fitness.
The teacher education programs must ensure that their graduates meet the Standards
for the Education, Competence and Professional Conduct of Educators in BC. The BC
Teachers' Council has the responsibility to approve any new teacher education programs
proposed in BC.

in BC restricted to First Nation language and culture studies. Anyone interested
in pursuing one of these DSTC programs should check directly with the First Nations Education
