Pre-Service Teacher Education
In BC, all those wishing to teach in public schools and in many independent schools,
including all First Nations schools, must hold a BC Ministry of Education certificate
issued by the Teacher Regulation Branch. There are opportunities throughout BC to
prepare for a career in K-12 education. Teacher education programs in BC, which
have been approved, have the right to recommend their graduates directly to the
Teacher Regulation Branch.
Admission to teacher education programs may vary depending on the individual program.
For example, some programs within BC require their applicants to have a degree before
they enter. Others allow students to enter with 60+ credits. Some programs award
a Bachelor of Education degree while others are designed to allow the student to
earn two degrees simultaneously.
