Extending a Certificate

Requests for extensions must be made within the six (6) months before your certificate expires. If your certificate expires, you will no longer be authorized to teach in BC and you will not be able to request an extension. You will need to reapply for certification.

The items you need to send us to request an extension depend on the type of certificate you hold and the circumstances of your request. Keep in mind that we may ask you for more supporting documents once we review your file.

The fee to request an extension is $35. You can pay by personal cheque, money order or bank draft payable to the Minister of Finance and send it to the Ministry of Education Teacher Regulation Branch. You can also pay by Visa, MasterCard or American Express by completing the Credit Card Payment Authorization Form.

Extending an Interim Standard or Interim Professional Certificate of Qualification

You may request an extension of your Interim Standard or Interim Professional Certificate of Qualification if your evaluation letter stated that, due to the amount of coursework required, we would extend your certificate if you completed at least half of the courses by the expiry date. We may grant you a one-time extension of four years.

To request this extension:

  1. email, mail or fax us a written request for an extension with a list of the courses you have completed,
  2. ask the post-secondary institution where you completed the courses to mail us your transcript, and
  3. submit the fee of $35.

Extending a Developmental Standard Term Certificate of Qualification

You may request an extension of your Developmental Standard Term Certificate of Qualification if you have made sufficient progress in completing your coursework requirements. We may grant you a one-time extension of four years.

Extending a Certificate of Qualification under Special Circumstances

We do not normally extend Certificates of Qualification beyond their expiry dates when the required courses have not been completed. You may request an extension of your Interim or Conditional Certificate of Qualification if you have been unable to complete the courses because of circumstances that you cannot control (for example, serious illness). We may grant you an extension of up to one year.

To request this extension:

  1. email, mail or fax us a written request for an extension describing your circumstances and stating when you will complete your required courses,
  2. include relevant supporting documents (such as a letter from your physician), and
  3. submit the fee of $35.

Extending an Independent School Teaching Certificate
